　ご存知、演劇のバイブル的存在のメソッド演技の続編の本です。
　もともと日本には、演劇の手法をマニュアル化したものがありませんでしたので、
　こうした本が、教科書的に使われたのだと思います。
　新劇というジャンル自体が、海外の演劇ですので、演技の仕方も同時に
　輸入されたわけですね。

メソードと非リアリズム様式

　東洋演劇の色や光や音にたいするアルトー（演出家）の感激には、わたしも共感する。しかし、そうした側面が歴史的には、すでに消滅して再生されることのない社会的ーしばしば封建的ー宗教的条件に、関連していることをわたしは心得ている。東洋演劇が西洋演劇を探究し、助けを求め、その助けがなくては、自分たち自身の現代生活を、うまく表現することができないのも事実なのだ。過去の傑作を保存できるというのは、芸術においてすばらしいことだが、人生はうごいていく。神秘的母胎への回帰の望みは、わたしにもわかるし、安泰をもとめる永遠の願いにも共感する。しかしわたしが参加して、こだわりつづけなくてはならないのは、いま生きている生活であり、その葛藤とリアリティである。

　I share Artaud’s feeling for the color, sight, and sound of Oriental theatre. However, I recognize that these aspects are religious conditions that have vanished and will not be revived. The fact is that these theatres are searching and looking for help in our Western theatres, without which they cannot find the proper representation of their own modern life . In art it is marvelous to be able to retain the master works of the past, but life goes on. If one wishes to return to some mystical wormb, I understand and sympathize with the eternal need for security. But I share in and must continue to deal with the life that we live today, ita struggle and ita reality.
